George Coetzee leads after shooting a first round of 64 on the opening day of the fourth Turkish Airlines Open.
The South African produced an outstanding first day, needing just 30 shots for the front nine at the Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resport.
Coetzee said: “I’ve been playing well and now is as good a time as any to start peaking.”
He leads Thorbjorn Olesen by a stroke with Jorge Campillo, Li Haotong, Bernd Wiesberger and Matteo Manassero all at five under par.
Spaniard Campillo had a day to remember with a hole in one at the par-three 14th hole, holing out with an eight iron from 163 yards.
Of the other marquee players, Thongchai Jaidee is four under after his 67, Danny Willett is two under par after his first round of 69, Lee Westwood is one under and Andy Sullivan and Andrew Johnston level.
The Turkish Airlines Open is the first of three of The Race to Dubai’s Final Series tournaments and 78 players are competing for a $7 million prize fund at the Regnum this week.
It is the fourth time that Turkish Airlines has sponsored the tournament, which takes place between November 3 and 6, having backed the World Golf Final in Belek in 2012.
